Bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia and, according to St Irenaeus, a hearer of the Apostle John and companion of St Polycarp. His Exposition of the Sayings of the Lord in five books is lost; only fragments preserved by Eusebius and Irenaeus survive — including his testimony about the authorship of Matthew and Mark.
