Saint Ambrose of Milan

c. 340 – 397 · Post-Nicene Latin Fathers · Latin

Commemorated December 7

Archbishop of Milan; Roman magistrate elected bishop by acclamation while still a catechumen, then baptized, ordained, and consecrated in a single week. The principal Latin teacher to St Augustine. His dogmatic treatises on the Holy Spirit and on the Incarnation transmitted Greek (especially Basilian) theology to the Latin West; his hymns and homilies shaped Western liturgical music for centuries. One of the Four Latin Doctors of the West, recognized as a saint in both East and West (commemorated 7 December).
