Saint Hilary of Poitiers

Bishop of Poitiers; the Athanasius of the West — the foremost Latin defender of Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism during the long crisis of the 4th century. Exiled to Phrygia by the Arianizing emperor Constantius II, where he composed his great De Trinitate in twelve books. His De Synodis sought to reconcile the moderate Eastern semi-Arians with the Nicene party; his Homilies on the Psalms transmit Eastern (especially Origen's) exegesis to the Latin West. The principal pre-Augustinian Latin theologian, deeply respected in the East as well.
