Constantinopolitan layman (a scholasticus — a lawyer) whose Ecclesiastical History in seven books continues Eusebius's narrative from 305 to 439, covering the Arian controversies, the Council of Constantinople, the deposition of St John Chrysostom, the Council of Ephesus, and the early years of Cyril of Alexandria. Often the most balanced narrative we possess of the disputed 4th- and early 5th-century events.
