Blessed Theodoret of Cyrus

Bishop of Cyrus in Syria; the foremost theologian and exegete of the Antiochene school after the Council of Ephesus. Initially aligned with Nestorius in opposition to St Cyril of Alexandria, he was deposed at the "Robber Council" of Ephesus (449) and restored at Chalcedon (451) after explicitly anathematizing Nestorius. His earlier writings against St Cyril were among the Three Chapters posthumously condemned by the Fifth Ecumenical Council (553). His Ecclesiastical History (covering 323–428), Dialogues (Eranistes) against Eutychian monophysitism, and Letters are historically and theologically valuable; his exegetical works are widely esteemed in both East and West.
