Saint Vincent of Lérins

c. 400 – 445 · Post-Nicene Latin Fathers · Latin

Commemorated May 24

Monk of the monastery of Lérins. His Commonitorium (Commonitory) gives the famous "Vincentian canon" — the criterion for distinguishing apostolic tradition from innovation: that which has been believed everywhere, always, and by all (quod ubique, quod semper, quod ab omnibus creditum est). Foundational to all subsequent reflection on the development of doctrine and the relation between Scripture and Tradition.
