Bishop of Alexandria (313–326); the immediate predecessor of St Athanasius and his teacher. The original opponent of the priest Arius, whose deposition Alexander effected at the Synod of Alexandria (c. 318). Present and active at the First Council of Nicaea (325). His Letters on the Arian heresy are the first sustained pre-Nicene refutation of Arianism.
