Catechetical Lectures

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem · c. 350 AD

Ante-Nicene Fathers (Roberts–Donaldson), Roberts, Donaldson, and Coxe (eds.), Ante-Nicene Fathers, Buffalo: Christian Literature Publishing, 1885–1887; digitized by CCEL.

Archbishop of Jerusalem; thrice exiled by the Arianizing emperors. His twenty-four Catechetical Lectures (the Procatechesis, eighteen lectures to those preparing for baptism, and five Mystagogical Lectures to the newly illumined) are the most detailed surviving witness to the liturgical and sacramental life of the 4th-century Church — covering the rites of catechumenate, baptism, chrismation, and the Eucharist as celebrated in Jerusalem.
