Saint Dionysius the Great of Alexandria · c. 250 AD
Ante-Nicene Fathers (Roberts–Donaldson), Roberts, Donaldson, and Coxe (eds.), Ante-Nicene Fathers, Buffalo: Christian Literature Publishing, 1885–1887; digitized by CCEL.
Disciple of Origen; Bishop of Alexandria (247–264) through the persecutions of Decius and Valerian. His extant letters preserved by Eusebius and others are a primary source for the Eucharistic, baptismal, and conciliar life of the mid-3rd-century Church. His controversy with Dionysius of Rome over Trinitarian language anticipates the distinctions of Nicaea.
