Chapter 20

¹ Then Zophar the Minaean answered and said,

Job 20:1

² I did not suppose that thou wouldest answer thus:

Job 20:2

³ I will hear my shameful reproach;

Job 20:3

⁴ Hast thou [not] known these things of old,

Job 20:4

⁵ But the mirth of the ungodly is a signal downfall,

Job 20:5

⁶ Although his gifts should go up to heaven,

Job 20:6

⁷ For when he shall seem to be now established,

Job 20:7

⁸ Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found;

Job 20:8

⁹ The eye has looked upon him, but shall not [see him] again;

Job 20:9

¹⁰ Let [his] inferiors destroy his children,

Job 20:10

¹¹ His bones have been filled with [vigor of] his youth,

Job 20:11

¹² Though evil be sweet in his mouth,

Job 20:12

¹³ Though he will not spare it, and will not leave it,

Job 20:13

¹⁴ Yet he shall not at all be able to help himself;

Job 20:14

¹⁵ [His] wealth unjustly collected shall be vomited up;

Job 20:15

¹⁶ And let him suck the poison of serpents,

Job 20:16

¹⁷ Let him not see the milk of the pastures,

Job 20:17

¹⁸ He has labored unprofitably and in vain, [for] wealth of which he shall not taste:

Job 20:18

¹⁹ For he has broken down the houses of many mighty men:

Job 20:19

²⁰ There is no security to his possessions;

Job 20:20

²¹ There is nothing remaining of his provisions;

Job 20:21

²² But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be straitened;

Job 20:22

²³ If by any means he would fill his belly,

Job 20:23

²⁴ And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword;

Job 20:24

²⁵ And let the arrow pierce through his body;

Job 20:25

²⁶ And let all darkness wait for him:

Job 20:26

²⁷ And let the heaven reveal his iniquities,

Job 20:27

²⁸ Let destruction bring his house to an end;

Job 20:28

²⁹ This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord,

Job 20:29
