Chapter 5

¹ But call, if anyone will hearken to thee,

Job 5:1

² For wrath destroys the foolish one,

Job 5:2

³ And I have seen foolish ones taking root:

Job 5:3

⁴ Let their children be far from safety,

Job 5:4

⁵ For what they have collected, the just shall eat;

Job 5:5

⁶ For labor cannot by any means come out of the earth,

Job 5:6

⁷ Yet man is born to labor,

Job 5:7

⁸ Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord,

Job 5:8

⁹ Who does great things and untraceable,

Job 5:9

¹⁰ Who gives rain upon the earth,

Job 5:10

¹¹ Who exalts the lowly,

Job 5:11

¹² Frustrating the counsels of the crafty,

Job 5:12

¹³ Who takes the wise in their wisdom,

Job 5:13

¹⁴ In the day darkness shall come upon them,

Job 5:14

¹⁵ And let them perish in war,

Job 5:15

¹⁶ And let the weak have hope,

Job 5:16

¹⁷ But blessed [is] the man whom the Lord has reproved;

Job 5:17

¹⁸ For he causes [a man] to be in pain, and restores [him] again:

Job 5:18

¹⁹ Six times he shall deliver thee out of distresses:

Job 5:19

²⁰ In famine he shall deliver thee from death:

Job 5:20

²¹ He shall hide thee from the scourge of the tongue:

Job 5:21

²² Thou shalt laugh at the unrighteous and the lawless:

Job 5:22

²³ For the wild beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

Job 5:23

²⁴ Then shalt thou know that thy house shall be at peace,

Job 5:24

²⁵ And thou shalt know that thy seed [shall be] abundant;

Job 5:25

²⁶ And thou shalt come to the grave like ripe corn reaped in its season,

Job 5:26

²⁷ Behold, we have thus sought out these matters;
