Sirach (Wisdom of Ben Sira)

Chapter 21

¹ My son, hast thou sinned? do so no more,

Sir 21:1

² Flee from sin as from the face of a serpent:

Sir 21:2

³ All iniquity is as a two edged sword,

Sir 21:3

⁴ To terrify and do wrong will waste riches:

Sir 21:4

⁵ A prayer out of a poor man’s mouth reacheth to the ears of God,

Sir 21:5

⁶ He that hateth reproof is in the way of sinners:

Sir 21:6

⁷ An eloquent man is known far [and near];

Sir 21:7

⁸ He that buildeth his house with other men’s money

Sir 21:8

⁹ The congregation of the wicked is like tow wrapped together:

Sir 21:9

¹⁰ The way of sinners is made plain with stones,

Sir 21:10

¹¹ He that keepeth the law of the Lord getteth the understanding thereof:

Sir 21:11

¹² He that is not wise will not be taught:

Sir 21:12

¹³ The knowledge of a wise man shall abound like a flood:

Sir 21:13

¹⁴ The inner parts of a fool are like a broken vessel,

Sir 21:14

¹⁵ If a skillful man hear a wise word,

Sir 21:15

¹⁶ The talking of a fool is like a burden in the way:

Sir 21:16

¹⁷ They inquire at the mouth of the wise man in the congregation,

Sir 21:17

¹⁸ As a house that is destroyed, so is wisdom to a fool:

Sir 21:18

¹⁹ Doctrine unto fools is as fetters on the feet,

Sir 21:19

²⁰ A fool lifteth up his voice with laughter;

Sir 21:20

²¹ Learning is unto a wise man as an ornament of gold,

Sir 21:21

²² A foolish man’s foot is soon in [his neighbor’s] house:

Sir 21:22

²³ A fool will peep in at the door into the house:

Sir 21:23

²⁴ It is the rudeness of a man to hearken at the door:

Sir 21:24

²⁵ The lips of talkers will be telling such things as pertain not unto them:

Sir 21:25

²⁶ The heart of fools is in their mouth:

Sir 21:26

²⁷ When the ungodly curseth Satan,

Sir 21:27

²⁸ A whisperer defileth his own soul,

Sir 21:28
