Sir 30:1

² He that chastiseth his son shall have joy in him,

Sir 30:2

³ He that teacheth his son grieveth the enemy:

Sir 30:3

⁴ Though his father die, yet he is as though he were not dead:

Sir 30:4

⁵ While he lived, he saw and rejoiced in him:

Sir 30:5

⁶ He left behind him an avenger against his enemies,

Sir 30:6

⁷ He that maketh too much of his son shall bind up his wounds;

Sir 30:7

⁸ A horse not broken becometh headstrong:

Sir 30:8

⁹ Cocker thy child, and he shall make thee afraid:

Sir 30:9

¹⁰ Laugh not with him, lest thou have sorrow with him,

Sir 30:10

¹¹ Give him not liberty in youth.

Sir 30:11

¹² Beat his sides while he is still young,

Sir 30:12

¹³ Train up thy son, and exercise him with work,

Sir 30:13

¹³ a And overlook not his ignorance.

Sir 30:13

¹³ b Bow down his neck in his youth.

Sir 30:13

¹⁴ Better is the poor, being sound and strong of constitution,

Sir 30:14

¹⁵ Health and good estate of body are above all gold,

Sir 30:15

¹⁶ There is no riches above a sound body,

Sir 30:16

¹⁷ Death is better than a bitter life

Sir 30:17

¹⁸ Delicacies poured upon a mouth shut up

Sir 30:18

¹⁹ What good doeth the offering unto an idol?

Sir 30:19

²⁰ He seeth with his eyes and groaneth,

Sir 30:20

²¹ Give not over thy mind to heaviness,

Sir 30:21

²² The gladness of the heart is the life of man,

Sir 30:22

²³ Love thine own soul,

Sir 30:23

²⁴ Envy and wrath shorten the life,

Sir 30:24

²⁵ I woke up last of all,

Sir 30:25

²⁶ And filled my winepress like a gatherer of grapes.

Sir 30:26

²⁷ Hear me, O ye great men of the people,

Sir 30:27

²⁸ Give not thy son and wife, thy brother and friend, power over thee while thou livest,

Sir 30:28

²⁹ As long as thou livest and hast breath in thee,

Sir 30:29

³⁰ For better it is that thy children should seek to thee,

Sir 30:30

³¹ In all thy works keep to thyself the preeminence;

Sir 30:31

³² At the time when thou shalt end thy days,

Sir 30:32

³³ Fodder, a stick, and burdens, [are] for the ass;

Sir 30:33

³⁴ If thou set thy servant to labor, thou shalt find rest:

Sir 30:34

³⁵ A yoke and a collar do bow the neck:

Sir 30:35

³⁶ Send him to labor, that he be not idle;

Sir 30:36

³⁷ Set him to work, as is fit for him:

Sir 30:37

³⁸ But be not excessive toward any;

Sir 30:38

³⁹ If thou have a servant, let him be unto thee as thyself,

Sir 30:39

⁴⁰ If thou have a servant, entreat him as a brother:

Sir 30:40
