Chapter 36

¹ There shall no evil happen unto him that feareth the Lord;

Sir 36:1

² A wise man hateth not the law;

Sir 36:2

³ A man of understanding trusteth in the law;

Sir 36:3

⁴ Prepare what to say, and so thou shalt be heard:

Sir 36:4

⁵ The heart of the foolish is like a cart wheel;

Sir 36:5

⁶ A stallion horse is as a mocking friend,

Sir 36:6

⁷ Why doth one day excel another,

Sir 36:7

⁸ By the knowledge of the Lord they were distinguished:

Sir 36:8

⁹ Some of them hath he made high days, and hallowed [them],

Sir 36:9

¹⁰ And all men are from the ground,

Sir 36:10

¹¹ In much knowledge the Lord hath divided them,

Sir 36:11

¹² Some of them hath he blessed and exalted,

Sir 36:12

¹³ As the clay is in the potter’s hand,

Sir 36:13

¹⁴ Good is set against evil, and life against death:

Sir 36:14

¹⁵ So look upon all the works of the most High;

Sir 36:15

¹⁶ Though I was the last to wake up,

Sir 36:16

¹⁷ O Lord have mercy upon the people that is called by thy name,

Sir 36:17

¹⁸ O be merciful unto Jerusalem, thy holy city,

Sir 36:18

¹⁹ Fill Zion with thine unspeakable oracles,

Sir 36:19

²⁰ Give testimony unto those that thou hast possessed from the beginning,

Sir 36:20

²¹ Reward them that wait for thee,

Sir 36:21

²² O Lord, hear the prayer of thy servants,

Sir 36:22

²³ The belly devoureth all meats,

Sir 36:23

²⁴ As the palate tasteth diverse kinds of venison:

Sir 36:24

²⁵ A froward heart causeth heaviness:

Sir 36:25

²⁶ A woman will receive every man,

Sir 36:26

²⁷ The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance,

Sir 36:27

²⁸ If there be kindness, meekness, and comfort, in her tongue,

Sir 36:28

²⁹ He that getteth a wife beginneth a possession,

Sir 36:29

³⁰ Where no hedge is, there the possession is spoiled:

Sir 36:30

³¹ Who will trust a thief well appointed,
