Chapter 37

¹ Every friend saith, I am his friend also:

Sir 37:1

² Is it not a grief unto death,

Sir 37:2

³ O wicked imagination, whence camest thou in

Sir 37:3

⁴ There is a companion, which rejoiceth in the prosperity of a friend,

Sir 37:4

⁵ There is a companion, which helpeth his friend for the belly,

Sir 37:5

⁶ Forget not thy friend in thy mind,

Sir 37:6

⁷ Every counselor extolleth counsel;

Sir 37:7

⁸ Beware of a counselor,

Sir 37:8

⁹ And say unto thee, Thy way is good:

¹⁰ Consult not with one that suspecteth thee:

Sir 37:10

¹¹ Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous;

¹² But be continually with a godly man,

Sir 37:12

¹³ And let the counsel of thine own heart stand:

¹⁴ For a man’s mind is sometime wont to tell him more

¹⁵ And above all this pray to the most High,

¹⁶ Let reason go before every enterprize,

Sir 37:16

¹⁷ The countenance is a sign of changing of the heart.

¹⁸ Four manners of things appear: good and evil, life and death:

¹⁹ There is one that is wise and teacheth many,

Sir 37:19

²⁰ There is one that showeth wisdom in words, and is hated:

Sir 37:20

²¹ For grace is not given him from the Lord;

Sir 37:21

²² Another is wise to himself;

Sir 37:22

²³ A wise man instructeth his people;

Sir 37:23

²⁴ A wise man shall be filled with blessing;

Sir 37:24

²⁵ The days of the life of man may be numbered;

Sir 37:25

²⁶ A wise man shall inherit glory among his people,

Sir 37:26

²⁷ My son, prove thy soul in thy life,

Sir 37:27

²⁸ For all things are not profitable for all men,

Sir 37:28

²⁹ Be not insatiable in any dainty thing,

Sir 37:29

³⁰ For excess of meats bringeth sickness,

Sir 37:30

³¹ By surfeiting have many perished;
