TextA−AA+Bookmarks0← Sirach (Wisdom of Ben Sira)Chapter 38Sir 38:1¹ Honor a physician with the honor due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him:Sir 38:1Sir 38:2² For of the most High cometh healing,Sir 38:2Sir 38:3³ The skill of the physician shall lift up his head:Sir 38:3Sir 38:4⁴ The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth;Sir 38:4Sir 38:5⁵ Was not the water made sweet with wood,Sir 38:5Sir 38:6⁶ And he hath given men skill,Sir 38:6Sir 38:7⁷ With such doth he heal [men,]Sir 38:7Sir 38:8⁸ Of such doth the apothecary make a confection;Sir 38:8Sir 38:9⁹ My son, in thy sickness be not negligent:Sir 38:9Sir 38:10¹⁰ Leave off from sin, and order thy hands aright,Sir 38:10Sir 38:11¹¹ Give a sweet savor, and a memorial of fine flour;Sir 38:11Sir 38:12¹² Then give place to the physician, for the Lord hath created him:Sir 38:12Sir 38:13¹³ There is a time when in their hands there is good success.Sir 38:13Sir 38:14¹⁴ For they shall also pray unto the Lord, that he would prosperSir 38:14Sir 38:15¹⁵ He that sinneth before his Maker,Sir 38:15Sir 38:16¹⁶ My son, let tears fall down over the dead,Sir 38:16Sir 38:17¹⁷ Weep bitterly, and make great moan,Sir 38:17Sir 38:18¹⁸ For of heaviness cometh death,Sir 38:18Sir 38:19¹⁹ In affliction also sorrow remaineth:Sir 38:19Sir 38:20²⁰ Take no heaviness to heart:Sir 38:20Sir 38:21²¹ Forget him not, for there is no turning again:Sir 38:21Sir 38:22²² Remember his judgment: for thine also shall be so;Sir 38:22Sir 38:23²³ When the dead is at rest, let his remembrance rest;Sir 38:23Sir 38:24²⁴ The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure:Sir 38:24Sir 38:25²⁵ How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plow,Sir 38:25Sir 38:26²⁶ He giveth his mind to make furrows;Sir 38:26Sir 38:27²⁷ So every carpenter and workmaster,Sir 38:27Sir 38:28²⁸ The smith also sitting by the anvil,Sir 38:28Sir 38:29²⁹ So doth the potter sitting at his work,Sir 38:29Sir 38:30³⁰ He fashioneth the clay with his arm,Sir 38:30Sir 38:31³¹ All these trust to their hands;Sir 38:31Sir 38:32³² Without these cannot a city be inhabited:Sir 38:32Sir 38:33³³ They shall not be sought for in public counsel,Sir 38:33Sir 38:34³⁴ But they will maintain the state of the world,Sir 38:34← Chapter 37Chapter 39 →
