Sirach (Wisdom of Ben Sira)

Chapter 38

¹ Honor a physician with the honor due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him:

Sir 38:1

² For of the most High cometh healing,

Sir 38:2

³ The skill of the physician shall lift up his head:

Sir 38:3

⁴ The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth;

Sir 38:4

⁵ Was not the water made sweet with wood,

Sir 38:5

⁶ And he hath given men skill,

Sir 38:6

⁷ With such doth he heal [men,]

Sir 38:7

⁸ Of such doth the apothecary make a confection;

Sir 38:8

⁹ My son, in thy sickness be not negligent:

Sir 38:9

¹⁰ Leave off from sin, and order thy hands aright,

Sir 38:10

¹¹ Give a sweet savor, and a memorial of fine flour;

Sir 38:11

¹² Then give place to the physician, for the Lord hath created him:

Sir 38:12

¹³ There is a time when in their hands there is good success.

Sir 38:13

¹⁴ For they shall also pray unto the Lord, that he would prosper

Sir 38:14

¹⁵ He that sinneth before his Maker,

Sir 38:15

¹⁶ My son, let tears fall down over the dead,

Sir 38:16

¹⁷ Weep bitterly, and make great moan,

Sir 38:17

¹⁸ For of heaviness cometh death,

Sir 38:18

¹⁹ In affliction also sorrow remaineth:

Sir 38:19

²⁰ Take no heaviness to heart:

Sir 38:20

²¹ Forget him not, for there is no turning again:

Sir 38:21

²² Remember his judgment: for thine also shall be so;

Sir 38:22

²³ When the dead is at rest, let his remembrance rest;

Sir 38:23

²⁴ The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure:

Sir 38:24

²⁵ How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plow,

Sir 38:25

²⁶ He giveth his mind to make furrows;

Sir 38:26

²⁷ So every carpenter and workmaster,

Sir 38:27

²⁸ The smith also sitting by the anvil,

Sir 38:28

²⁹ So doth the potter sitting at his work,

Sir 38:29

³⁰ He fashioneth the clay with his arm,

Sir 38:30

³¹ All these trust to their hands;

Sir 38:31

³² Without these cannot a city be inhabited:

Sir 38:32

³³ They shall not be sought for in public counsel,

Sir 38:33

³⁴ But they will maintain the state of the world,

Sir 38:34
