Chapter 17

Proverbs · King Solomon

¹ Better is a morsel with pleasure in peace,

Pr 17:1

² A wise servant shall have rule over foolish masters,

Pr 17:2

³ As silver and gold are tried in a furnace,

Pr 17:3

⁴ A bad man hearkens to the tongue of transgressors:

Pr 17:4

⁵ He that laughs at the poor provokes him that made him;

Pr 17:5

⁶ Children’s children are the crown of old men;

Pr 17:6

⁶ a The faithful has the whole world full of wealth;

Pr 17:6

⁷ Faithful lips will not suit a fool;

Pr 17:7

⁸ Instruction is to them that use it a gracious reward:

⁹ He that conceals injuries seeks love;

¹⁰ A threat breaks down the heart of a wise man;

¹¹ Every bad man stirs up strifes:

Pr 17:11

¹² Care may befall a man of understanding;

Pr 17:12

¹³ Whoso rewards evil for good,

Pr 17:13

¹⁴ Rightful rule gives power to words;

Pr 17:14

¹⁵ He that pronounces the unjust just, and the just unjust,

Pr 17:15

¹⁶ Why has the fool wealth?

Pr 17:16

¹⁶ a He that exalts his own house seeks ruin;

Pr 17:16

¹⁷ Have thou a friend for every time,

Pr 17:17

¹⁸ A foolish man applauds and rejoices over himself,

Pr 17:18

¹⁹ A lover of sin rejoices in strifes;

Pr 17:19

²⁰ And the hard-hearted man comes not in for good.

²¹ And the heart of a fool is grief to its possessor.

²² A glad heart promotes health;

Pr 17:22

²³ The ways of a man who unjustly receives gifts in [his] bosom do not prosper;

Pr 17:23

²⁴ The countenance of a wise man is sensible;

Pr 17:24

²⁵ A foolish son [is a cause of] anger to his father,

Pr 17:25

²⁶ [It is] not right to punish a righteous man,

Pr 17:26

²⁷ He that forbears to utter a hard word is discreet,

Pr 17:27

²⁸ Wisdom shall be imputed to a fool who asks after wisdom:
