Chapter 6

Proverbs · King Solomon

¹ [My] son, if thou become surety for thy friend,

Pr 6:1

² For a man’s own lips become a strong snare to him,

Pr 6:2

³ [My] son, do what I command thee, and deliver thyself;

Pr 6:3

⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes,

Pr 6:4

⁵ That thou mayest deliver thyself as a doe out of the toils,

Pr 6:5

⁶ Go to the ant, O sluggard;

Pr 6:6

⁷ For whereas he has no husbandry,

Pr 6:7

⁸ He prepares food for himself in the summer,

Pr 6:8

⁸ a Or go to the bee,

Pr 6:8

⁸ b Whose labors kings and private men use for health,

Pr 6:8

⁸ c Though weak in body,

Pr 6:8

⁹ How long wilt thou lie, O sluggard?

Pr 6:9

¹⁰ Thou sleepest a little, and thou restest a little, and thou slumberest a short [time],

Pr 6:10

¹¹ Then poverty comes upon thee as an evil traveler,

Pr 6:11

¹¹ a But if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall arrive as a fountain,

Pr 6:11

¹² A foolish man and a transgressor

Pr 6:12

¹³ And the same winks with the eye, and makes a sign with his foot,

Pr 6:13

¹⁴ [His] perverse heart devises evils:

Pr 6:14

¹⁵ Therefore his destruction shall come suddenly;

Pr 6:15

¹⁶ For he rejoices in all things which God hates,

Pr 6:16

¹⁷ The eye of the haughty, a tongue unjust,

Pr 6:17

¹⁸ And a heart devising evil thoughts,

Pr 6:18

¹⁹ An unjust witness kindles falsehoods,

Pr 6:19

²⁰ [My] son, keep the laws of thy father,

Pr 6:20

²¹ But bind them upon thy soul continually,

Pr 6:21

²² Whensoever thou walkest, lead this along and let it be with thee;

Pr 6:22

²³ For the commandment of the law is a lamp and a light;

Pr 6:23

²⁴ To keep thee continually from a married woman,

Pr 6:24

²⁵ Let not the desire of beauty overcome thee,

Pr 6:25

²⁶ For the value of a harlot is as much as of one loaf;

Pr 6:26

²⁷ Shall anyone bind fire in his bosom,

Pr 6:27

²⁸ Or will anyone walk on coals of fire,

Pr 6:28

²⁹ So is he that goes in to a married woman;

Pr 6:29

³⁰ It is not to be wondered at if one should be taken stealing,

Pr 6:30

³¹ But if he should be taken, he shall repay sevenfold,

Pr 6:31

³² But the adulterer through want of sense procures destruction to his soul.

Pr 6:32

³³ He endures both pain and disgrace,

Pr 6:33

³⁴ For the soul of her husband is full of jealousy:

Pr 6:34

³⁵ He will not forego [his] enmity for any ransom:

Pr 6:35
