Chapter 77

Psalms · King David

¹ [A Psalm] of instruction for Asaph.

Ps 77:1

² I will open my mouth in parables:

Ps 77:2

³ All which we have heard and known,

Ps 77:3

⁴ They were not hidden from their children to a second generation;

Ps 77:4

⁵ And he raised up a testimony in Jacob,

Ps 77:5

⁶ That another generation might know,

Ps 77:6

⁷ That they might set their hope on God,

Ps 77:7

⁸ That they should not be as their fathers,

Ps 77:8

⁹ The children of Ephraim, bending and shooting [with] the bow,

Ps 77:9

¹⁰ They kept not the covenant of God,

Ps 77:10

¹¹ And they forgot his benefits,

Ps 77:11

¹² The miracles which he wrought before their fathers,

Ps 77:12

¹³ He clove the sea, and led them through:

Ps 77:13

¹⁴ And he guided them with a cloud by day,

Ps 77:14

¹⁵ He clove a rock in the wilderness,

Ps 77:15

¹⁶ And he brought water out of the rock,

Ps 77:16

¹⁷ And they sinned yet more against him;

Ps 77:17

¹⁸ And they tempted God in their hearts,

Ps 77:18

¹⁹ They spoke also against God, and said,

Ps 77:19

²⁰ Forasmuch as he smote the rock, and the waters flowed,

Ps 77:20

²¹ Therefore the Lord heard, and was provoked:

Ps 77:21

²² Because they believed not in God,

Ps 77:22

²³ Yet he commanded the clouds from above,

Ps 77:23

²⁴ And rained upon them manna to eat,

Ps 77:24

²⁵ Man ate angels’ bread;

Ps 77:25

²⁶ He removed the south wind from heaven;

Ps 77:26

²⁷ And he rained upon them flesh like dust,

Ps 77:27

²⁸ And they fell into the midst of their camp,

Ps 77:28

²⁹ So they ate, and were completely filled;

Ps 77:29

³⁰ They were not disappointed of their desire:

Ps 77:30

³¹ Then the indignation of God rose up against them,

Ps 77:31

³² In the midst of all this they sinned yet more,

Ps 77:32

³³ And their days were consumed in vanity,

Ps 77:33

³⁴ When he slew them, they sought him:

Ps 77:34

³⁵ And they remembered that God was their helper,

Ps 77:35

³⁶ Yet they loved him [only] with their mouth,

Ps 77:36

³⁷ For their heart [was] not right with him,

Ps 77:37

³⁸ But he is compassionate,

Ps 77:38

³⁹ And he remembered that they are flesh;

Ps 77:39

⁴⁰ How often did they provoke him in the wilderness,

Ps 77:40

⁴¹ Yea, they turned back, and tempted God,

Ps 77:41

⁴² They remembered not his hand,

Ps 77:42

⁴³ How he had wrought his signs in Egypt,

Ps 77:43

⁴⁴ And had changed their rivers into blood;

Ps 77:44

⁴⁵ He sent against them the dog fly, and it devoured them;

Ps 77:45

⁴⁶ And he gave their fruit to the canker worm,

Ps 77:46

⁴⁷ He killed their vines with hail,

Ps 77:47

⁴⁸ And he gave up their cattle to hail,

Ps 77:48

⁴⁹ He sent out against them the fury of his anger,

Ps 77:49

⁵⁰ He made a way for his wrath;

Ps 77:50

⁵¹ And smote every firstborn in the land of Egypt;

Ps 77:51

⁵² And he removed his people like sheep;

Ps 77:52

⁵³ And he guided them with hope, and they feared not:

Ps 77:53

⁵⁴ And he brought them in to the mountain of his sanctuary,

Ps 77:54

⁵⁵ And he cast out the nations from before them,

Ps 77:55

⁵⁶ Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God,

Ps 77:56

⁵⁷ And they turned back, and broke covenant, even as also their fathers:

Ps 77:57

⁵⁸ And they provoked him with their high places,

Ps 77:58

⁵⁹ God heard and lightly regarded [them],

Ps 77:59

⁶⁰ And he rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh,

Ps 77:60

⁶¹ And he gave their strength into captivity,

Ps 77:61

⁶² And he gave his people to the sword;

Ps 77:62

⁶³ Fire devoured their young men;

Ps 77:63

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword;

Ps 77:64

⁶⁵ So the Lord awoke as one out of sleep,

Ps 77:65

⁶⁶ And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts:

Ps 77:66

⁶⁷ And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph,

Ps 77:67

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah,

Ps 77:68

⁶⁹ And he built his sanctuary as [the place] of unicorns;

Ps 77:69

⁷⁰ He chose David also his servant,

Ps 77:70

⁷¹ He took him from following the ewes great with young,

Ps 77:71

⁷² So he tended them in the innocency of his heart;

Ps 77:72
