Chapter 48

¹ Then stood up Elijah the prophet as fire,

Sir 48:1

² He brought a sore famine upon them,

Sir 48:2

³ By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven,

Sir 48:3

⁴ O Elijah, how wast thou honored in thy wondrous deeds!

Sir 48:4

⁵ Who didst raise up a dead man from death,

Sir 48:5

⁶ Who broughtest kings to destruction,

Sir 48:6

⁷ Who heardest the rebuke of the Lord in Sinai,

Sir 48:7

⁸ Who anointedst kings to take revenge,

Sir 48:8

⁹ Who wast taken up in a whirlwind of fire,

Sir 48:9

¹⁰ Who wast ordained for reproofs in their times,

Sir 48:10

¹¹ Blessed are they that saw thee,

Sir 48:11

¹² Elijah it was, who was covered with a whirlwind;

Sir 48:12

¹³ No word could overcome him;

Sir 48:13

¹⁴ He did wonders in his life,

Sir 48:14

¹⁵ For all this the people repented not,

Sir 48:15

¹⁶ Of whom some did that which was pleasing [to God],

Sir 48:16

¹⁷ Hezekiah fortified his city,

Sir 48:17

¹⁸ In his time Sennacherib came up,

Sir 48:18

¹⁹ Then trembled their hearts and hands,

Sir 48:19

²⁰ But they called upon the Lord who is merciful,

Sir 48:20

²¹ He smote the host of the Assyrians,

Sir 48:21

²² For Hezekiah had done the thing that pleased the Lord,

Sir 48:22

²³ In his time the sun went backward,

Sir 48:23

²⁴ He saw by an excellent spirit what should come to pass at the last,

Sir 48:24

²⁵ He showed what should come to pass forever,

Sir 48:25
